IV Iron Infusion Therapy for Anemia
Our practice in Northcliff, Johannesburg, provides out-of-hospital IV iron infusion therapy for patients who are suffering from anemia and are prescribed IV iron by their treating doctor.
How we work
The process for an iron infusion is as follows:
- Iron profile studies are done by your treating medical doctor;
- If there is a need for IV iron, a prescription is written by your treating doctor;
- You then have the option of purchasing the medication yourself or sending us the prescription, which will be forwarded to Scriptwise pharmacy who will dispense the medication to the Infusion Centre;
- An appointment is then made with us for the infusion;
- We require a copy of the prescription, as well as the medication in order to run the infusion. We do not keep stock of iron at our practice.
The cost of the iron is billed to you or your medical aid by the pharmacy and the cost of this varies depending on what iron is prescribed.
The cost to administer the iron is billed at the Discovery Health rate. We are a cash practice with card facilities. You will be an issued an invoice that you can claim back from the medical aid.
What to expect when you get here
Before you receive your full infusion, we will administer a test dose to ensure you have no negative reaction to the medication. During the test dose, you will be given a small amount of iron over a 5-minute period and we will monitor you for any reactions.
If you have no allergic response or any other unanticipated reactions, we administer the remaining iron.
